How the solar calculation works
Everything starts from your daily electricity use in units (1 unit = 1 kWh), which is printed on your electricity bill. Divide the monthly units by 30 for a daily figure.
- Solar panel size (kW) = daily units ÷ 4. In most of India, 1 kW of panels produces about 4 units a day on average.
- Number of panels = panel size in watts ÷ the wattage of one panel, rounded up.
- Inverter size (kW) = your peak load (or the panel size) × 1.25, so the inverter is not run at its limit.
- Battery (kWh) = daily units × days of backup ÷ 0.81, the same allowance used in our battery calculator.

Worked example: 10 units a day
- Panels: 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5 kW, which is 5 panels of 550W
- Inverter: 2.5 kW × 1.25 = about 3.1 kW, so a 3.6 kW hybrid inverter
- Battery for one day of backup: 10 ÷ 0.81 = about 12.3 kWh, which is about 241Ah at 51.2V, so a 51.2V 280Ah battery
What changes the real output
- Shade from trees, water tanks or nearby buildings
- The direction and tilt of the roof (south-facing is best in India)
- Dust on the panels and very hot weather
- Cloudy and monsoon days, when output falls well below average

Your electricity bill shows the units used in the billing month. Divide by 30 (or by 60 for a two-month bill).

Only if you want power during cuts or at night. A hybrid inverter can run with or without a battery, so you can add one later.
